How to break a big project into small tasks

Turn “launch the website” into steps you can finish this week.

Big projects stall because the first step is unclear. Break the work down until each task fits in a single sitting.

1. Write the outcome

Start with one sentence describing what done looks like. “Website live with five pages” is better than “work on the website”.

2. Find the milestones

List three to five chunks that lead to the outcome, such as content, design, build, test and launch. Each becomes a task group inside the project.

3. Shrink each chunk to steps

Keep splitting until every task starts with a verb and takes under two hours.

  • Draft the home page copy
  • Pick three reference sites
  • Export the logo in two sizes

4. Watch the ring close

As you tick tasks off, the project ring fills. Seeing real progress makes the next task easier to start.
